the second largest moon of Jupiter. In mythology Callisto was a nymph and hunting companion of the goddess Artemis, to whom she had sworn a vow of chastity. Zeus (Jupiter) lusted after Callisto, and seduced her in the form of Artemis, her mistress. Callisto became pregnant and when Artemis found her with a swollen belly, she transformed Callisto and her son Arcas into the Bear constellations- Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Here’s a quote from Madeline Miller “It’s an electrifying moment, and an unusual one; there are very few surviving mentions of women loving women from the ancient world, simply because nearly all of the ancient writers were men..But that is not that case here: Callisto welcomes her mistress’ passionate embrace. For a moment it almost seems like we have stumbled upon a wonderful secret history..” Zeus has an extensive history of tricking then assaulting young maidens, and although this myth is quite tragic, its yielded some incredible early queer paintings.
